Single Stroke Roll
The foundation. Perfectly even, both hands identical.

Big letter = full stroke · filled = accent. Notation reads as on a practice-pad sheet: accents marked >, slashed small notes are grace notes, z on the stem is a buzz. R rings higher than L, so you can hear the hands.

What it is
Alternating single strokes, right-left-right-left, at an even volume and spacing. It is the first thing every drummer plays and the last thing anyone perfects: the single stroke roll is the pure test of whether your two hands are the same.
How to practise it
- Film it or play it into a mirror. The goal is two hands that look identical, not only sound it.
- Push the tempo until it falls apart, then sit ten BPM under that point for a week.
- Start where every stroke is deliberate, around 60–80 BPM, and only speed up when it feels boring. When it is clean, take it to the tempo trainer and let trainer mode climb from where you are.
