Most new snares are built to cut. Canopus has gone the other way.

The Japanese maker has launched the BA-1470, the first drum in a new Baritone Series, as Drumming News Network reported on 12 October. It’s a lower-pitched snare built to sit inside the band, not on top of it.

So what’s in it, and when can you get one? Let’s find out.

What is the BA-1470?

Canopus says the series is meant to explore “the musical potential of the mid-to-low frequencies”. The idea is a snare that supports an ensemble and adds depth, rather than fighting vocals, guitars and horns for space.

It follows an earlier limited-edition Baritone Snare from Canopus. This time, it’s the start of a full series.

The specs

  • Size: 14” x 7”
  • Shell: 10-ply walnut/birch hybrid, 8 mm thick, with Canopus’s own bearing edge
  • Finish: Black Walnut Oil
  • Hardware: chrome lugs and 8-hole die-cast hoops
  • Snares: 12-strand Vintage Snare Wire (CPSL-14DR)
  • Batter head: two-ply coated heavy (CB14E)
  • Strainer: CSA20S / CSA21B

A 7” depth, a heavy coated head and a vintage-style wire all point the same way. This is a drum designed with body in mind.

When is it out?

The BA-1470 is available from 15 October 2026. Canopus hasn’t confirmed a price in the announcement, so check the Canopus product page or your local Canopus dealer.

Final thoughts

A whole series built around a lower snare voice is a confident move, and a welcome one for drummers who play in bigger line-ups. The only catch for now is the missing price.
