The first Drumeo country award, in 2021, went to a drummer most of the drumming internet had never heard of — which is fairly typical of the category, and fairly typical of Nashville.

Billy Freeman has been driving Dustin Lynch’s band for years. He has played Jimmy Kimmel Live, he has done the whole American touring circuit, and he is the sort of drummer whose whole professional value is that nothing ever goes wrong.

Here is what a working country touring drummer’s career actually looks like.

Who is Billy Freeman?

Billy Joe Freeman is an American drummer with Texas roots, based in Nashville.

He is best known as Dustin Lynch’s touring drummer and effectively his band’s engine room — the role that got him Country Drummer Of The Year at the inaugural Drumeo Awards in 2021, a year in which the band appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Alongside the touring he works as a session drummer and does remote recording work, which is now how a large proportion of Nashville sessions actually happen.

He has also talked publicly and usefully about the less glamorous side of the job — the self-doubt, the uncertainty, and the business of building a career as a sideman — on several drumming podcasts.

What Billy Freeman actually does

He plays for the song, at arena volume. Modern mainstream country is a rock gig with a country vocabulary, and the drums have to be big without being busy.

He keeps the traditional vocabulary. Train beats, brushes, cross-stick verses, and the ability to drop from a stadium chorus to almost nothing.

He is dependable. That is not faint praise. A touring drummer’s actual product is consistency — the same tempo, the same feel, the same show, three hundred nights a year.

He is a sideman by choice. The Nashville sideman career is a genuine profession with its own skills: reading the room, holding your tongue, playing the parts as recorded, being easy to travel with.

Final thoughts

There are perhaps a few hundred people in the world doing this exact job at this level, and almost none of them are famous. That is the deal, and Freeman appears to have made peace with it a long time ago.

He is also proof that the first winner of a public-vote award does not have to be the biggest name in the room — sometimes it is just the drummer whose band’s fans turned out.
