Tama Starclassic Performer | Drum kit guide (2026)

The Tama Starclassic Performer drum kit has become a favourite amongst drummers in the past ten or so years. It is easy to see why. You are getting a pro-grade acoustic drum kit for a fraction of the cost when compared to the premium kits. 

We first wrote this guide in 2021, when Tama had just reintroduced the Starclassic Performer with a brand new maple/birch hybrid shell. Five years on, that kit is still the one you buy. So what has changed, and what do you get in 2026? Let’s find out.

What has changed since 2021?

If you read the original version of this guide, here is the short version of what is different now.

• Nothing structural. The maple/birch shells, die-cast hoops, Star-Cast mounts and the two standard configurations are the same as in 2021.
• A fifth standard finish. Sky Blue Aurora joined the four original lacquers in 2022.
• A run of limited editions. Crimson Red Waterfall (2023), Green Grove Aurora (2025), a Hyper-Drive kit in Smoky Gray or Dusty Rose (2026) and a matte Blacked Out Black kit (2026).
• Prices have gone up. A five-piece shell pack is now around $1,900 in the US and roughly £1,550 in the UK. More on that below.

What wood is in the Tama Starclassic Performer?

The Tama Starclassic Performer Drum Kit uses a hybrid shell of maple and birch. It is the same recipe in 2026 as it was when the kit launched in 2021. To be specific:

• Tom toms/ Floor toms/ Snare Drums: 6mm, 4ply Birch + 2 inner ply Maple
• Bass Drum: 7mm, 5ply Birch + 2 inner ply Maple

This combination gives you the focused attack and projection of birch on the outside, with the warmth and low end of maple underneath it.

Previous Tama Starclassic kits have used combinations of wood such as bubinga/ birch and walnut/ birch. 

What hardware comes on the Tama Starclassic Performer?

The hardware that comes on a drum kit can make an undeniable difference to the end sound. Lets have a look at what comes on the Tama Starclassic Performer.

The hoops

The Starclassic performer comes with Tama’s professional line die-cast hoops. These are made from zinc and are formed by injecting the molten metal into moulds. 

Die-cast hoops come with a great range of benefits:

• Easier tuning
• More consistent tuning
• Crisper attack
• Clear resonant sound
• Powerful rim shots 

Die-cast hoops make a drum easier to tune evenly, but they will not do it for you. Pair them with our free drum tuner and you will hear what those hoops are actually worth.

The mounting system

The Star-Cast Mounting System is what you will find on the Tama Starclassic Performer Drum Kit. This is the go-to choice for all of Tama’s professional kit lines. They offer maximum resonance and stability whilst allowing you more options to place your toms where you want them.

What finishes are available on the Tama Starclassic Performer?

The 2021 model launched with four different lacquer finishes. All of them are beautiful but there was one standout. Caramel Aurora. It won’t be for everyone but wow, what a finish.

Here are the standard finish options in 2026:

• Molten Steel Blue Burst
• Caramel Aurora
• Dark Cherry Fade
• Piano Black
• Sky Blue Aurora (added in 2022)

Availability varies by region and by shop, so not every finish is stocked everywhere.

Limited editions

This is where Tama has been busiest. Since 2021 the Performer has had a string of limited runs, mostly hand-painted lacquers with black nickel hardware:

• Crimson Red Waterfall (2023). A blend of rich reds, limited to 100 kits in North America.
• Green Grove Aurora (2025). Layered greens with black nickel hardware.
• Smoky Gray and Dusty Rose (2026). A Hyper-Drive version with shallower toms. More on that below.
• Blacked Out Black (2026). Flat black shells, black interiors and matte black metalwork. We covered it in our Tama 2026 news round-up.

What configurations does Tama Starclassic Drum Kits come in?

The Tama Starclassic Performer Drum Kits still come in two standard configurations. A four-piece or a five-piece. Neither of them comes with a snare, so bear that in mind when purchasing.

Four Piece Kit (MBS42S w/ Chrome Hardware)

The sizes of this kit are very much that of a traditional drum kit. This kit consists of:

• 10”x8” Tom Tom
• 12”x9” Tom Tom
• 16”x”14” Floor Tom
• 22”x16” Bass Drum
• Double Tom Holder (Bass Drum Mount)

Five Piece Kit (MBS52RZS w/ Chrome Hardware)

This kit comes with shorter size tom-toms for an even punchier stand. This kit consists of:

• 10”x7” Tom Tom
• 12”x8” Tom Tom
• 14”x12” Floor Tom
• 16”x14” Floor Tom
• 22”x16” Bass Drum
• 2 x Single Tom Mounts

Hyper-Drive Limited Edition (MBS52HZBNS, 2026)

New for 2026, and limited, this is the five-piece with Tama’s Hyper-Drive tom sizes. Shallower toms give you more attack and make them easier to position. This kit consists of:

• 10”x6.5” Tom Tom
• 12”x7” Tom Tom
• 14”x12” Floor Tom
• 16”x14” Floor Tom
• 22”x18” Bass Drum
• 2 x MC69 Single Tom Mounts

It comes in Smoky Gray or Dusty Rose with black nickel hardware.

Individual Drums

If the preconfigured kits don’t meet your tastes you can also order individual tom-toms, floors toms, bass drums and snare drums. These can be used to enhance one of the preconfigured kits or to create something truly unique.

How much does the Tama Starclassic Performer cost in 2026?

Prices have gone up since 2021, like everything else. In the US, the five-piece MBS52RZS shell pack is around $1,900. In the UK, expect to pay roughly £1,350 for the four-piece and around £1,550 to £1,600 for the five-piece. Remember to budget for a snare and hardware on top.

Why is the Tama Starclassic Performer Drum Kit so cheap?

“Cheap” is relative, but there is no doubt that with the Tama Starclassic Performer you are getting a lot of bang for your buck. There are still some differences between the Tama Starclassic Performer and the more expensive Tama STAR kits.

The main differences are:

• The wood of the STAR lines is just one material and don’t use any form of hybrid.
•  The shells on the STAR range feature a unique and more complex bearing edge shape.
• The hardware on the STAR range features the latest Tama patent technology.

All of these differences lead to a drum the costs more to make due to the time-consuming shells and more expensive hardware. 

All this doesn’t mean you aren’t getting a professional level kit with the Tama Starclassic Performer. Far from it. Tama is always pushing the boundaries with their kits and much like with technology, you pay a premium for the latest innovations.

Final thoughts

If you are looking for a professional sounding acoustic drum kit at a good price, the Tama Starclassic Performer is still a great choice in 2026. You are getting an amazing sounding kit without the premium price you pay for the very top range kits.

It is easy to see why it has become a favourite among so many professional drummers, such as the incredible Anup Sastry.

The maple/birch Performer has now been around for five years, and Tama has not needed to change the drums, only the paint. Our honest caveat is the price. It has crept up, and a snare and hardware are still extra, so the real cost is well above the shell pack.
