Terri Lyne Carrington

Documented by Drum Faster

Three Grammys, a professional union card at eleven, and the founder of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. A colourist rather than a timekeeper — and a cymbal setup far wider and stranger than a traditional jazz drummer would own.

2022 — The New Standards era

The cymbal setup is the interesting part: mismatched hi-hats, a wide spread of thin dark crashes, and a bank of effects cymbals — a trash splash, a small china, a Latin multi-crash — that a straight-ahead jazz player would never own. That is the texture her playing runs on.
