66Samus has a signature snare | And it comes both ways
drum-tec has built 66Samus a 13x7 signature snare in birch, maple and mappa burl — available as an acoustic drum or a fully triggered electronic one.
Signature snares are usually a straight choice: you get the acoustic drum, and that is that.
66Samus has done something more interesting. His new signature snare with German e-drum specialists drum-tec comes in two versions — acoustic or electronic — built on the same shell.
The drum
It is a 13” x 7”, which is a properly metal set of dimensions: small diameter for crack and speed, deep enough to keep the body underneath it.
The shell is where it gets unusual. Birch and maple plies together, with a mappa burl outer — birch for the attack and the upper-mid bite, maple to round out the low end, and a wildly figured veneer on the outside to look at while you do it.
The clever bit
The electronic version is the same drum with a full trigger system inside.
Three sensors sit centrally in the shell, wired to cancel out hotspots so you do not get a volume spike when you drift off centre, plus a dedicated rim sensor tucked under the cushion for rimshot detection. It is ready for positional sensing too, so the module knows whether you hit the middle or the edge and can respond accordingly.
In other words: it plays and feels like a real 13x7 wood snare, and triggers like a purpose-built pad.
Why it makes sense for him
If you have watched any 66Samus video you will know his whole kit is triggered — he is completely open about it, and does his drum replacement in Toontrack. A snare designed from the shell outwards for exactly that workflow is not a gimmick for him, it is the tool he was already improvising.

Final thoughts
A signature drum that solves a real problem rather than just carrying a name on the badge. The mappa burl is very silly and we mean that as a compliment.
