Paiste Giant Beat

The 1960s CuSn8 line John Bonham played — reissued, and still the warmest bright cymbal Paiste makes.

Giant Beat arrived in the late 1960s and lasted less than a decade in its original run, but the drummers who bought them made the line immortal. Cast from the CuSn8 bronze that later became the 2002, they sit warmer and looser than the series that replaced them: big, breathy crashes and a ride that washes rather than pings.

John Bonham's Giant Beats are the reference, and his documented rig in the Rig Vault below carries the 15" hi-hats, the 18" crash and the 24" ride. Paiste reissued the range in 2005, so this is one vintage sound you can still buy new — each item links to who plays it and where to buy.
